In the summer of 2013, we had begun plans to hold a symposium for Randy in honor of his 65th birthday, which would be held the following summer. Little did we know that the Nobel Prize Committee would give us an even better reason for a big party and lab reunion!
When all was said and done, we had over 90 Schekman lab alumni return from all over the world for the symposium, and the total headcount was almost twice that after adding in family and colleagues. The event consisted of three parts: a reception hosted by Randy at his home the day before (he even went out and bought the wine and beer for it himself!), an all-day program of scientific talks on campus featuring a variety of topics presented by a cross section of the alumni, and a sumptuous banquet held at the Berkeley Art Museum in the evening. A splendid time was had by all!
